Black History Month 2025 at Microsoft UK: Standing Firm in Power and Pride (2025)

Black History Month 2025: Uniting in Strength and Heritage

Microsoft UK employees embarked on a transformative journey during October, dedicating Black History Month to the powerful theme of 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride'. This theme became the heartbeat of a series of events, each designed to educate, inspire, and foster a deeper sense of unity.

The month was a tapestry of diverse experiences, from an insightful panel discussion on neurodiversity to a vibrant marketplace fair, where Black-owned businesses took center stage. BBC broadcaster Primrose Granville captivated audiences with a talk on the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott, and a charity tennis tournament for DKMS, a blood cancer charity, brought the community together for a noble cause.

Embrace, a dynamic community of 600 Microsoft employees, dedicated to celebrating and advancing ethnic diversity, organized a grand closing celebration. This event, both in-person and virtual, was a testament to the power of community.

Jeramie Sutton, Embrace Co-chair, passionately expressed, "We aspire to create spaces where we unite, connect, and stand tall in our power and heritage." This sentiment was echoed by BHM organizers Dedun Oyenuga and Anjola Adebowale, who emphasized the mission to empower Black talent, driving the digital revolution.

The celebration was a tapestry of emotions, with moments of reflection, inspiration, and connection. It celebrated the achievements, stories, and voices that defined the month's journey.

Jeramie Sutton, Embrace Co-Chair, reiterated, "This is not just a one-time event. We aim to create an enduring environment of unity and strength, not just during Black History Month." Amber Joyce, the other Embrace Co-Chair, added, "Despite challenges, we stand united and proud. Our mission is to succeed, inspire, and educate on ethnicity, leaving a lasting impact."

The Power of Representation

Two iconic Black leaders, Pam Maynard, Chief AI Transformation Officer for Microsoft Customers & Partners, and Jacky Wright, former Microsoft Chief Digital Officer and current senior partner at McKinsey, shared their journeys as Black female leaders in predominantly male industries.

Zephaniah Chukwudum, Microsoft's Director of Local & Devolved Government and Transport, introduced them as "two powerhouses" in the tech world. He highlighted Maynard's global AI transformation role and her presence in Vogue magazine and the UK Power List. Wright, he noted, is a global leader, formerly Microsoft's Chief Digital Officer and a Power List Number One.

But here's where it gets personal...

When reflecting on the BHM theme, Maynard shared a profound insight: "I've learned that my difference is my power." She described her journey of recognizing her own strength in rooms where she was the only person of her background. Wright added a unique perspective, emphasizing mental fortitude and the power of community and individuality.

The Strength of Self-Belief

Both leaders opened up about their experiences as often the sole Black woman in the room. Wright shared her strategy, "I enter with my elevator pitch, ensuring my presence is known." Maynard encouraged the audience to embrace their expertise, saying, "Your knowledge is your strength." She emphasized the importance of allyship and collective action for sustained progress.

Wright agreed, highlighting the value of communities for support and cultural pride. She urged everyone to recognize their impact, no matter how small, like a simple phone call to check in.

As the month concluded, the message was clear: standing firm in power and pride is an everyday commitment. Black History Month 2025 at Microsoft UK showcased the transformative potential of community, representation, and collective action. And this is the part most people miss—the power of these events lies in their ability to inspire lasting change, far beyond the month of celebration.
