The recent appearance of Vladimir Putin, 73, with a visibly sickly and shriveled hand at a public event in Russia has sparked a wave of speculation about the dictator's health. The footage, captured at a conference last week, shows Putin's right hand looking extremely painful and withered, covered in bulging veins and thin, wrinkled skin.
As he stood motionless next to a basketball hoop, Putin's hands were seen clenched tightly by his side, which commentators said looked extremely painful. Social media users have expressed concern, with one pro-Ukrainian news outlet, Nexta, stating, 'Social media users are puzzled by what happened to the hands of the Russian dictator—they look extremely painful.'
Anton Gerashchenko, a former adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry, echoed these sentiments on his X account, asking, 'What’s with Putin’s hands in this video?' He added, 'There’s something wrong with Putin’s hands. Apart from the fact that they’re covered in blood up to the elbows, his veins are bulging too.'
Ukrainian journalist Dmytro Gordon described Putin's hand as 'swollen and sore, with veins bulging prominently on one hand.' Social media users have also weighed in, with one posting, 'Putin, apart from being mentally sick, might also be physically sick. His hands are bloated with the veins very swollen.'
The scrutiny surrounding Putin's hands is not without precedent. It echoes the speculation around President Donald Trump's hands, which are regularly seen with bruises. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt attributed Trump's bruised hand to 'tissue damage from frequent handshaking' while taking aspirin, part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen. She also mentioned a diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency, which can cause swelling in the lower limbs.
Putin's health has long been a subject of intense speculation, fueled by persistent rumors that he is suffering from a mystery disease and may be close to death. In September, he was overheard discussing organ harvesting with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, suggesting a desire to live forever. 'Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become,' Putin told Xi during a conference in Beijing.
Geraschenko previously drew attention to Putin's hand in November 2024, noting that a video showed them 'not moving and look like they are separate from his body.' The Kremlin had to admit in October of the same year that Putin had been admitted to a hospital in Moscow after disappearing from public view for over two weeks.
